A workcation is probably just about every person’s dream right now.
With remote work becoming the new norm, the ability to go abroad and combine work with the perks of a vacation may be the new way to “travel”.
This idea is exactly what many countries around the world have been trying to promote. With long term visitor programs and visas becoming available to entice digital nomads, students and remote workers.
As the pandemic continues, governments are looking for innovative ways to get people to relocate for up to a year, to help improve the local economy. Countries like Barbados, Bermuda and Georgia are opening their doors offering long term visas.
Barbados
The Government of Barbados has introduced the 12-month Barbados Welcome Stamp, allowing already employed visitors the option to work remotely for up to a year.
Barbados is an island country total area of 430sq km with an estimated population of 287,375 (2020) in the Caribbean region of North America, ranking as a popular tourist destination. Barbados is described as having a stable infrastructure for internet and mobile services, a range of office locations, excellent healthcare, and good schools.
- Visitors can stay up to 12 months.
- Applicants submit electronically required documents including a copy of your passport and birth certificate. For dependents, you must provide proof of relationship.
- Visa-holders are exempt from paying the Barbados Income Tax.

Bermuda
Since Barbados made their announcement, Bermuda has announced a one-year residential certificate to anyone interested in relocating for 12 months for both remote workers and students.
Bermuda a self-governing British Overseas Territory has a population of a little over 70,000. Made up of 181 island and famous for its pink sand beaches, it has been a popular tourist destination.
- Online applications began on the 1st of August.
- Bermuda is looking to extend its tourist visa from 90 days to 180 days.
- Workers must be 18 years old and above.
- One of the few programs that are aimed at students.
- Marketed for both professionals and students.
- Have health insurance.
- Demonstrate sufficient funds.
- Provide proof of employment for workers.
- Provide proof of enrollment in an educational program for students.
Fee

Georgia
Georgia is also looking to introduce a new visa program to target those who are self-employed and remote workers but has yet to launch the program.
- Can stay for longer than 6 months.
- The online application will be available through the Ministry of Economy website once the program has launched.
- Proof of travel insurance.
- Visitors need to quarantine at their own expense for 15 days upon the arrival.
Barbados, Georgia, and Bermuda are countries who are looking to bring economic activity to their countries without displacing the local workers.
For a lot of people, these countries may not be a possible option due to flight and government restrictions but I have no doubt that more countries will be looking to implement these types of programs in the near future.
